Self-administration of medication using a multidose vial
Please note that these instructions are for
guidance only. Speak to your doctor or fertility specialist for
full directions on self-administration.
Mixing (or reconstituting) a multidose
vial
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Place materials on a dry, clean
surface.
- Remove the protective cap from the
vial.
- Carefully twist the cap off the pre-filled
syringe of sterilised water.
- To prevent contamination, avoid touching the needle.
- Position the needle of the pre-filled syringe
in a straight, upright position over the marked centre circle of
the rubber stopper on the vial of powder.
- Make sure the needle remains in a straight, upright position as
you insert it through the centre circle, or it may be difficult to
depress the plunger.
- Slowly inject the water into the vial by
pressing down on the plunger.
- When all the water has been injected into the
vial, withdraw the needle and dispose of it immediately in your
sharps container.
- Do not shake the vial.
- If bubbles appear, wait a few moments for the bubbles to
settle.
Preparing your dose
- Your fertility team will tell you exactly how
much of the medication you are to inject on each day of
treatment
- Wipe the rubber stopper of the vial with an
alcohol swab.
- Remove the outer wrapping from the
syringe.
- Carefully pull the cap from the needle,
avoiding touching the needle.
- Firmly holding the vial of reconstituted
medication on a flat surface, insert the needle through the marked
centre of the rubber stopper.
- Keeping the needle in the bottle, lift the
bottle and turn it upside down with the needle pointing towards the
ceiling.
- With the needle tip in the liquid, slowly
pull back the plunger until the syringe fills to slightly more than
the mark for your prescribed dose.
- Next, keeping the needle in the vial, slowly
push the plunger to your prescribed dose.
- This will clear away any air bubbles.
- Remove the syringe from the vial.
- Recap the needle while you prepare your injection
site.
Injecting your dose
- Your doctor or nurse will have advised you
where to inject (abdomen, thigh or upper arm).
- Swab the injection site with alcohol and
allow it to dry.
- Carefully pull the needle cap from the
syringe.
- Holding the syringe in one hand, hold the
skin around the injection site the way you were instructed.
- Insert the needle at a slight angle.
- Press down on the plunger in a slow, steady
motion until all the medication is injected.
- Withdraw the needle and dispose of it in your
sharps container.
- If any bleeding occurs, apply gauze to the
site with gentle pressure.
