Self-administration using an ampoule
Please note that these instructions are for
guidance only. Speak to your doctor or fertility specialist for
full directions on self-administration.
Mixing (or reconstituting) ampoules
- Wash your hands thoroughly
- Place materials on a dry, clean surface
- Hold the powder ampoule upright with the dot
facing away from you
- Using a gauze, grasp the top of the ampoule
between your thumb and index finger.
- Carefully snap the neck of the ampoule by twisting outward with
the tips of your thumbs.
- Remove the protective cap from the syringe,
being careful not to touch the needle.
- If you choose to use the long (40mm) needle to withdraw sterile
water, hold the capped portion while placing onto the nozzle of the
syringe.
- Insert the needle into the sterile water and
pull back the plunger to the 1 ml mark, being careful not to remove
the plunger.
- Insert the sterile water into an ampoule of
powder by pressing down on the plunger and aiming at the side of
the ampoule, not directly onto the powder.
- Do not shake the ampoule.
- If bubbles appear, wait a few moments for the bubbles to
settle.
- Use only if the mix is clear and
colourless.
- If your dose requires more than one
ampoule:
- Draw the mixture back up into the syringe.
- Be sure to keep the tip of the needle within the mixture while
withdrawing.
- Then add the contents of the syringe to the next ampoule of
powder.
- This process should be repeated until your recommended dose is
completely mixed.
Preparing your dose
- Your fertility team will instruct you on your
exact dose.
- If you used a 40mm needle for mixing, replace
it with a short 12mm needle.
- Carefully cover the long needle with a
cap.
- Next, grasp the barrel of the syringe, pull
off the covered needle and discard it in the safety
container.
- Place the short needle into the nozzle of the
syringe and remove the needle cap.
- Remember not to touch the needle.
- Turn it so the needle is pointing up, and tap
the syringe.
- After all the bubbles float to the top,
lightly press the plunger until a drop or two of liquid is released
from the tip of the needle.
- Next, put the protective cap back on the
needle while you prepare the injection site.
Injecting your dose
- Your doctor or nurse will have advised you
where to inject (abdomen, thigh or upper arm).
- Swab the injection site with alcohol and
allow it to dry.
- Carefully pull the needle cap from the
syringe.
- Holding the syringe in one hand, hold the
skin around the injection site.
- Insert the needle at a slight angle.
- Press down on the plunger in a slow, steady
motion until all the medication is injected.
- Withdraw the needle and dispose of it in your
sharps container.
- If any bleeding occurs, apply gauze to the
site with gentle pressure.
