Female Specialist Tests
The first step in any infertility evaluation
involves taking a complete and detailed medical history from both
partners. The history may reveal clues to the underlying causes of
infertility in the couple. This information can aid in focusing
subsequent physical examination, laboratory tests and visualisation
procedures.
The doctor typically asks about past medical and surgical events,
especially any prior investigation or treatment for infertility. He
also asks about current health status, including lifestyle and
diet, occupational risks, history of sexual development, use of
birth control, previous pregnancies or impregnations and sexual
practices within the current relationship. In some countries, the
physician will obtain the information needed for a complete history
by asking the couple to complete a standardised patient history
form.
By asking the appropriate questions, the physician can better
select the specific diagnostic tests that will identify the cause
of a couple’s infertility. For example, if a woman reports a
history of venereal disease, especially of repeated infections,
damage to her fallopian tubes is very likely.
