Third Step

Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART)

Options in fertility treatment can be overwhelming. They represent very advanced medical treatments and deeply personal decision-making. One treatment category is Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).

ART is the umbrella term for a variety of medical procedures that are used to bring eggs and sperm together in order to achieve pregnancy. Perhaps the most familiar ART procedure is IVF or in vitro fertilization.

We’ll outline all of the current ART procedures in this section:
The first successful human IVF procedure was performed in 1978, and since then, the success rates of ART procedures have increased steadily. In 2000, the live birth rate for women under 35 undergoing ART was 33% per cycle initiated, a very favourable number when compared to the 20% chance average fertile couples have in any given month of establishing a pregnancy and carrying it to term. Although ART success rates decline significantly with older women, the chances for pregnancy have gone up for all age groups.

In the USA, the number of ART procedures performed is also rising, reaching almost 100,000 in 2000. From 1996 to 2000, the live birth deliveries resulting from ART rose 73%, from 14,573 to 25,228.

While these statistics are good news, each couple's experience is different. It is best to focus on your own medical condition and goals. It may be helpful to use the information in this web site as you discuss treatment with your doctor. Together, you can decide what course of action is best for you.
