Caffeine

Though most of us are accustomed to that little extra ”kick” provided by a few cups of coffee throughout the day, some doctors now say that excessive caffeine consumption may lead to delays in conception.

Experts also say that high caffeine intake can affect both male and female fertility, so it’s best for both partners to keep tabs on how much coffee, tea, cola and chocolate they consume during infertility treatment. In addition to the potential impact on fertility, caffeine can impair your body’s absorption of iron and calcium, upset your stomach, lead to anxiety and keep you from getting the sleep you need.

As a rule of thumb, men and women who are trying to conceive should limit their individual caffeine consumption to about 300 mg per day, the equivalent of three cups of coffee. Caffeine doesn’t just mean normal coffee; it’s also an ingredient in brewed, iced and instant teas; dark and milk chocolates; chocolate milk; regular and diet colas. And “decaffeinated” doesn’t necessarily mean "caffeine-free.” A cup of decaf coffee has about 5 mg of caffeine.
