Exercise
Fitness and Fertility: Making the connection work
for you
You know exercise is good for your physical and
mental health, but did you know that moderate exercise might help
you conceive?
Exercise helps reduce body fat, which can make a big difference
for some women.
The fat/estrogen/fertility connection is
clear
Because about 30% of estrogen comes from fat
cells, too much fat – or too little – can alter hormonal balance,
lowering your odds of conceiving. A body fat level just 10-15%
above or below normal can contribute to infertility.
Moderate, regular exercise can burn excess fat, boosting fertility,
heart health and energy levels. If you don’t exercise regularly,
start gradually by making activity part of your daily routine. (See
the pop-up for ideas.) Eventually, you can work up to a regular
routine. Thirty minutes a day, 4-5 days a week can make a
difference in your fat levels.
Don’t get too carried away!
Excessive vigorous exercise can impair fertility,
too. So low-impact exercises are ideal. If you run or do other
high-impact aerobic activities, ask your doctor if you need to cut
back.
One last thought
It’s not about blame. Numerous factors are
involved in infertility, so don’t blame yourself if you’ve led a
sedentary life. View this as an opportunity to increase your odds
of conceiving while improving your health.
