Varicose Veins
This condition is present in 25-40% of men
attending infertility clinics compared with about 10-15% of men in
the general population. The pathogenesis of spermatogenesis failure
in men with varicocele is largely unknown. One suggestion is that
this failure is due to increased temperature, together with
accumulation of CO2 and other noxious substances (including adrenal
steroids and catecholamines) caused by pooling of blood in the
distended veins. The role of varicocele in infertility, especially
with respect to its management, is controversial. Infertility due
to varicocele sometimes responds to ligation of the dilated blood
vessels.
