Retrograde Ejaculation

Retrograde ejaculation is a cause of infertility, in which spermatozoa are pumped backwards into the bladder rather then ejaculated into the female tract. The condition is responsible for less than 1% of male infertility and as the sperms are normal, they may be recovered from the urine to be used in assisted reproductive techniques.

Once the spermatozoa have been ejaculated in the female tract, their motility depends on their forward motion. Patients with the rare Kartagener’s syndrome (immotile cilia syndrome) are unable to produce motile spermatozoa.
