Impotence

Impotence is a failure to achieve erection. It is not a cause of infertility, but because it makes sexual intercourse difficult or impossible, may result in failure to conceive.

The underlying cause is often psychological, but may also be due to heavy smoking or drinking or to use of medication, especially antidepressants or antihypertensives. Treatment depends mainly upon the cause:
  • Counselling for psychological problem.
  • Change of prescribed medicine.
Until recently, drug treatment of impotence mainly depended upon (often painful) injection into the erectile tissues of the penis; it has now been revolutionised by the introduction an oral treatments.

A Note of Caution

If you have experienced any of the following conditions and have been unable to achieve pregnancy with your partner, see your doctor without delay:
  • A history of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • A history of drug, alcohol, or cigarette abuse.
  • Previous urologic surgery.
  • Any sexual difficulties.
  • Mumps after puberty.
  • Vasectomy reversal.
  • Prostate infections.
  • Family history of cystic fibrosis or other genetic disorders.
  • Previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
